Freedom, Debt, Prisons, (coffee) Profit! (07.04.17)

“Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” The actual fucking amendment, SO HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!

Seriously though we need to take a hard look at ourselves America.

  • Half of the worlds prison population, about 9 million, is held in prisons in America, Russia, or China.
  • Prison rates in the US are the world’s highest, at 724 people per 100,000.
  • In Russia the rate is 581.At 145 per 100,000, the imprisonment rate of England and Wales is at about the midpoint worldwide.
  • Many of the lowest rates are in developing countries, but overcrowding can be a serious problem. Kenyan prisons have an occupancy level of 343.7%

These facts are brought to you by Wiki and BBC .

The NAACP put up a fact sheet that showed 1980-2015 we went from 500,000 incarcerations to 2.2 million people. Not only that but every 1 in 37 adults in the U.S. is under  correctional supervision.

Though African Americans and Hispanics make up approximately 32% of the US population, they comprised 56% of all incarcerated people in 2015.
Suicide has been the leading cause of death in jails every year since 2000. In 2013, the most recent year for which there are BJS statistics, a third (34%) of jail inmate deaths were due to suicide. The suicide rate of all prisoners increased 14% between 2012 and 2013 to 46 per 100,000. That compares with 13 per 100,000 in the population as a whole.

Gerrymandering In North Carolina was proved to be unconstitutional this year and has been the forefront of 2017 elections. While you may not feel that you are personally gerrymandered you may be a part of the small group of Americans who have the ability to reach their voting booth, with an I.D. in hand with ease. I can walk to my voting booth, it is always being worked by several people and it is an easy in and easy out. However to read more about what happened in North Carolina read this.

While we continue to talk about many things, we want to talk about why this matters. This is a for profit, CROWD CONTROL, situation.

The companies making the most money from prisons in America are Geo Group and Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), which combined run more than 170 prisons and detention centres. CCA made revenues of $1.79bn in 2015, up from $1.65bn in 2014. Geo Group made revenues of $1.84bn, a 9% increase on the previous year. Also recently, it was reported that Corrections Corporation of America, the second-largest for-profit prison system in the country, netted $3,300 per prisoner in 2015. A 2012 contract between the Arizona Department of Corrections and MTC, another private corrections company, guaranteed a rate of nearly $18,000 per prisoner per year, according to Think Progress. What’s more, many private prisons have guaranteed occupancy clauses in their contracts, generally ranging from 90 to 100 percent, meaning that if cells aren’t filled, the states must pay anyway, which smells a lot like an incentive to imprison people who maybe don’t need to be imprisoned? But what do I know, I’m not an economist.

The Bureau of Prisons paid $639 million to private prisons in fiscal year 2014, averaging $22,159 per prisoner. For perspective, that’s about the same amount it would cost to send three people to a state college.

Fucked up shit isn’t it?No? Oh okay well when 1 out of your 37 family/friend members end up on some form of probation you let me know.

While there are a lot of other things we tap into this episode we felt that incarceration in America is the one that gets looked over the most. Stay as free as you can and always remember to check your mail.
